The 34th World Ophthalmology Congress® 2014 opens in Tokyo!

The 34th World Ophthalmology Congress® 2014 opens in Tokyo! (Through April 6). Nearly 18,000 people from around the globe are coming here to attend WOC2014, one of the largest medical conferences in the world. Congress Corporation is supporting the operations to ensure a smooth and successful congress.

The World Ophthalmology Congress® of the International Council of Ophthalmology opened today and will continue until April 6, 2014 at Tokyo’s flagship convention center, Tokyo International Forum, and the Imperial Hotel Tokyo. The WOC is one of the world’s oldest congresses, first held in Belgium in 1857. It is Japan’s second time to host the WOC, the last time being 36 years ago in Kyoto.
Cherry trees bloomed around Tokyo just in time for the event, enhancing the fun for both Japanese and overseas participants. Approximately 9,500 attendees are from Japan, and some 8,500 from 133 countries/regions, a total of 18,000 people. The congress features a broad range of seminars and symposia over the 6-day period, at both of the venues.
For many years, the 10th International Conference on Aids (1994, Yokohama), also operated by Congress Corporation, held the record for attendance at an international medical conference in Japan, yet WOC2014 has far surpassed that in terms of scale.

WOC2014 brings the top ophthalmologists from around the world together to present and share their latest research, which contributes to the further development of ophthalmology and simultaneously seeks to contribute to raising the level of diagnostic and treatment for eye diseases in developing countries. Indeed, WOC this year brought many participants from developing countries particularly in Asia.
Congress Corporation was especially keen to welcome and serve the attendees with “O-MO-TE-NA-SHI,” Japanese-style hospitality, and promote all the fascinating aspects of Japan. We are utilizing all of our resources and efforts toward ensuring the success of this esteemed congress.

  • Bustling registration area as delegates arrive.

  • At the Opening Ceremony, board members from international ophthalmology-related associations made a surprise appearance on stage.

  • The gigantic cherry blossom arrangement in the outdoor plaza at Tokyo International Forum. Cherry blossoms in full bloom, lit up during the reception, wowed the delegates.
